I lived in the old primary school at Ascot, just north of Ballarat, for 23 years. Ascot Working recorded the everyday working lives of many locals and honoured their activities when it was hung in the local hall. The exhibition was extended for a two month run at The Art Gallery of Ballarat. Farmers who had never set foot in Ballarat’s old and prestigious gallery visited in small groups and proudly smiled at themselves.
This exhibition was assisted by funds from Regional Arts Victoria and was the beginning of an exploration of three country towns in Victoria which culminated in a book WORK, PLAY TRADE: A TRIPOD OF COUNTRY LIFE.
